Taking pictures can be extremely beneficial for so many different reasons. Maybe you are just capturing the many different memories and moments in your life in order to look back on and/or show them to your kids/grandkids. Or maybe you enjoy inspiring people in your community or even friends and family through your passions and creativity. Or you might run a business that requires you to take pictures for marketing purposes. Regardless of the many reasons and benefits to taking pictures, you should always strive to have quality images. Images that represent you, your product, your business, or whatever else, well. So today, I’m sharing all my secret tips and tricks to taking bomb pictures without using any fancy equipment or spending hundreds on a photographer. Be sure to let me know in the comments any cool tips you may use! 😉
1. KNOW YOUR PHONE/CAMERA
There are soooo many features and tools on our phones and cameras these days that it’s hard to keep up! But it is so so worth it to take the extra time to play around with all the fun settings, lighting adjustments, camera modes, etc. For example, I love using portrait mode on my iPhone to blur the background. You just have to pay close attention and make sure the camera is fully in focus. I also learned a trick for adjusting the lighting to be brighter/darker on the iPhone camera so you don’t have to try to fix it later in editing! (Let me know if I should do a screen recording to show you how I do it :)) The main point here is that a lot of these features can help enhance or improve the overall quality of your pictures while also lessening your editing process.
The location of you, your subject, product, etc., determines the overall feel and focus of the pic. For example, if you take a picture with a dirty, messy kitchen or bedroom in the background, that’s what eyes will typically gravitate toward most when looking at the image. So be aware of what you want the focus of your image to be and plan out your location accordingly while being mindful of what’s in the background. (Trash, dumpster, other people, etc.)
Another very important aspect to the quality of your pictures! A few things to remember are to always face the light (windows, sun, etc.), be mindful of shadows and the time of day you’re shooting (the location of the sun plays a huge part in lighting), and choose your locations with lighting in mind! (Is the area well lit? Or is the lighting terrible? Or is the lighting too yellow? etc.)
This is something I’m STILL learning and experimenting with but the most important thing is to just have fun!! Don’t take it too seriously. Look on Pinterest or Instagram for inspiration. Try different poses, different angels, sitting, standing, twirling, walking, ANYTHING! When you’re switching up your poses you create variety and you learn what poses or angles you like best. So try them all! See what fits you best. There’s no rule book or a right or wrong way to do it. Just do whatever makes you YOU!
This is the part that a lot of people will over-complicate. Unless you just enjoy getting super intricate and creative, there’s no reason to spend hours editing your pictures. I suggest investing in a preset! Presets make photo editing simple, quick, and easy. In just one click you can have your editing complete and a stunning professional looking image. My favorite presets are from Jenn’s Photo Works, the Au Naturale Preset Bundle. I’m not one that likes heavily edited pictures, so I love that this bundle just enhances the overall look of the picture. Its subtle, natural, but still gives you a polished quality image! You can even use my code ANGELARENE30 to get a great deal on a bundle of 10 presets. Jenn has a variety of preset bundles to choose from as well, so check out her site to see what style suits you best!
Now go take some bomb pictures, grow your biz, and make memories that’ll last a lifetime! 😉
