1. SKIN PREP You want to make sure you begin with a clean and MOISTURIZED face. And yes, you still need to moisturize if you have oily skin! The mattifying techniques and products I am about to share will not work well on dry skin. Your skin will look aged and any dry patches will just be enhanced. This is the only moisturizer I use, as it is my all time fave! It is SUPER hydrating, leaves your skin soft & smooth, has SPF 20 to protect from sun damage, has both vitamin E and C, and is vegan, gluten, and cruelty free! 2. PRIME Now in my opinion, I think primers are a scam and all work the same LOL! So really any primer would work for this next step. I start by applying a decent amount of primer to my T-Zone (since that is the area that I get oily most) making sure to really get it in my pores. I then apply a light layer of my setting powder to all those areas that I applied the primer to set it. THIS IS KEY! What this does is not only set your primer in place to create a smoother canvas for foundation but it gives your skins natural oils (or sweat lol) something to absorb before showing up on the surface of your makeup and creating that shiny look.
3. APPLY YOUR BASE It is important to pay attention to the products you are using and making sure they are the right products for your skin overall. For example, if you have oily skin, you won’t want to use a super hydrating/dewy foundation that leaves your skin extra shiny. You want to look for foundations that say “matte” or “oil free”. My favorite everyday drug store foundation is this one by Maybelline or this one by Loreal. Both are mattifying and long lasting and have worked really well with my skin. A higher end brand I’d recommend would be this one by Estee Lauder. Definitely recommended for any of my oily brides out there! 🙂 I like to use a Real Techniques Sponge to apply as I personally like the finish it gives more than a brush but honestly you can use whatever is most comfortable to you!
4. CONCEAL Similar to foundation, it is important to pick the right concealer for you! So for me, I don’t want anything TOO creamy that’s going to leave an oily shine or settle into my large pores. So I go for more of a “dryer” concealer that will leave a matte finish. These are two of my top favorite concealers that I’ve been using for a while! 1 | 2 The Morphe concealer is the more afforable option and the one I reach for regularly. Whereas Tarte’s Shape Tape concealer is more high end and what I utilize more for special occasions and in my kit for clients! Both are incredible though and in my top faves! 🙂 You can apply your concealer in an upside down triangle under your eyes to brighten and even apply a little on your eyelids to utilize as a base for eyeshadow. You can also apply a little on your chin, center of forehead, and down the bridge of your nose to highlight those key areas of your face! And again using a beauty sponge or whatever you are comfortable with to blend it out evenly!
5. SET, SET, AND SET SOME MORE 🙂 If you have really oily skin, powder will be your best friend!! I make sure to apply a generous amount of powder on all the areas I put concealer. I then do a thinner layer of powder over the remaining areas to set my foundation. I let that powder sit for a minute or 2 and then use a fluffy brush to sweep away any excess and make sure it’s all blended in. I then proceed with my powder bronzer and blush as this gives even more of a barrier to catch any oil or sweat in this summer heat! Then once the rest of your makeup is complete, just top it off with a good setting spray which will help bring your skin back to life and melt everything together smoothly! This one is my fave because it also protects my skin from environmental stressors like dirt and pollution and minimizes shine and oil breakthrough throughout the day.
